    5Great pen, much more fun than a Bic!Jul 30, 2010
I bought this pen after seeing that there was a refillable option for it (bought that, too). In the first week of owning it I used it all over the place - in the sketchbook, writing notes, even in the back of an ambulance. Held up great, and it's really, really expressive (it took me a little while to get used to the blue ink; now I love it. It looks like everything I sketch is an old-style blueprint). The pen moves beautifully over all kinds of paper (sketch book isn't known for being the smoothest around and it had no problems) and leaves a nice consistent line - no blotting or anything.

A couple of things to be aware of: 1) I bought a medium point pen because I like the chunky feel of the line. The down side is that the nib tends to get a little excess ink on it, so if you're not careful you may end up with a little ink on the inside of your fingers. It's all part of the charm of using a fountain pen. 2) The ink on the tip dries, so you may find yourself having to remove a tiny bit of dried ink if you let it sit for too long with the cap off. Considering the affordability of the pen and its overall performance these aren't really downsides.

I am now thinking of either getting a second one with a fine tip or buying a fine tip so I can use different weights when drawing. I am also considering staying with the blue ink - all of the black ink I have is permanent (shellac based) which isn't supposed to go through this pen, so I have to buy ink one way or another - and I like the look of the current indigoish ink.

In short - BUY THIS PEN.

    1Fountain PenJul 24, 2010
I do not recommend this product. I was looking for a quality fountain pen. Instead, I got a cheap plastic pen with the wrong color ink. The grip is uncomfortable, the ink fails to flow evenly, and the point does not move smoothly over paper. I have been making purchases on Amazon.com for years and have generally been satisfied with their products. This was the worst product I ever purchased through them.

    5Excellent feel and finishJun 06, 2010
I ordered one - loved it - and have ordered a second. I prefer the Lamy over a number of far more expensive fountain pens I have. Great fit and feel to it.

    5The Glock pistol of pens.Apr 10, 2010
At the risk of offending the gun haters, the Lamy Safari is to pens what the Glock 17 is to pistols: it's made in Germany/Austria, it's made of polymer so it's light, and it works very well. Like the Glock it even has a little built in window so you can tell how much ammo or ink you have left.

I'm not really into fountain pens but my wife bought me a gift quality fountain pen for my birthday. I fell in love with the way it writes but it was just too darned heavy for writing. So I bought the Lamy Safari. The medium tip makes my chicken scratch handwriting look less scratchy.

    4Great pens at a great price.Mar 30, 2010
I bought this Safari for my fiancee because she liked mine so much. I've owned two Safaris and they are great pens for the money. They're fairly durable and they write well. The fine point tends to write more like a medium and the medium leans towards bold. The nibs are sturdy and not flexible. The clips are large and rather industrial in build so they clip to a pocket or notebook easily and securely. The pen is comfortable to hold for long periods of time and the barrel and cap are durable and have stood up to about 2 years of me carrying it around in the front pocket of my jeans.

The Safaris I've owned have all written like a dream in my Moleskine books, which brings me to the only negative aspect about these pens. They do not write well on standard loose leaf or printer paper, nor do they write well on checks. My pens tend to get scratchy and start to skip whenever I write on anything that isn't a high quality paper. I would have thought that for the price point, the Safari would have been geared towards everyday writing, lending itself to being used on all paper types, good and bad, but I have yet to be impressed.

I spoke with one individual who recommended getting the ink converter and trying a different ink to see if that helps.

All in all, this pen gets a 5 for build, a 5 for comfort and a 3 for usability.
